Skin Allergies - Allergy Causes and Symptoms
The three main types of skin allergies that may occur are, contact dermatitis, food allergy, and allergic inhaled dermatitis.
Causes
Skin allergies occur when the body’s immune system overreacts, to a substance mistakenly perceived to be harmful, by producing
large quantities of antibodies. This over production of antibodies, is responsible for an allergic reaction the next time a similar
substance is encountered, resulting in the symptoms of skin allergies.
The allergens, or triggers, that give rise to a skin allergies reaction, can be anything from pollen, to certain foods, and some
others that inflict their misery through direct contact with the skin. Poison ivy is an example, and could induce the skin allergies
symptoms of contact dermatitis. Ragweed can be an inhaled source of skin allergies, as can mold, animal dander, pollen, dust mites and
other allergens.
Symptoms
There are various symptoms of skin allergies including:
Eczema is considered to be the condition of skin allergies, which is the hardest to treat. It may affect
the face, arms, and legs, particularly the back of the knees. The skin becomes dry, itchy, and flaky, and a red rash with blisters,
frequently develops. Eczema usually start in childhood, and those affected may also suffer from asthma and hay fever.
Hives is an unpleasant symptom of skin allergies, with red and itchy blotches. It may be acute, lasting up
to 6 weeks, or chronic, that can recur over a significant time scale, but is less common.
Dermatitis is one of the fairly common skin allergies, resulting from a variety of sources, many of which are
industrial. In this respect employers have health and safety responsibilities. Dermatitis causes inflammation, soreness, and itching
that may also result in blisters. It mostly affects the face and hands.
The best treatment for skin allergies is to avoid the substances, or allergens, that trigger the disorder. Your doctor is
the best person, from whom to seek advice on other treatments, and in any event should always be consulted the first time you become aware that
you suffer from any allergy.
